In the English Department, you’ll learn to read with insight and to write with flair and thought. You’ll understand how language enriches your career and the greater world. Most importantly, you’ll discover that your life will be richer for the reading, critical analysis, and creative problem-solving that are the heart of our English courses. |
|
Exploration: You’ll ask—and answer—questions about such topics as historical periods, use of language, critical interpretations, the role of the reader, and the importance of story. More . . . Creativity: Many of CUC's literature courses include a creative component. You may find yourself writing a poem in the spirit of Emily Dickinson, acting out a scene from a Restoration drama, or blogging in the style of medieval pilgrim Margery Kempe. Writing courses encourage you to “mine” your own experiences and perfect your writing voice. More . . Travel: Although off-campus courses are not available each semester, you’ll discover that field trips add to your understanding and enjoyment of literature. More . . . Community: You’ll find that the English Department is vibrant and personable. You may find teachers and students diagramming sentences on the sidewalk, asking their professors about graduate school, or workshopping papers. More . . . Preparation: You may ask, “I love to read and write, but what can I do with an English degree?” The 3-Year Concentration in English offers you a broad introduction to English literary studies and encourages you to read perceptively and closely. This option usually serves as a foundation for further studies in related areas. The 4-Year Major in English is designed to prepare you for graduate school and, possibly, university teaching. You’ll study language, criticism, and literature and will cap your study with a senior research project. More . . . If you’ve planned on a career in a different field but are interested in literature or writing, an English or writing minor may be for you; however, if you want to teach English, you can take an Education degree with an English specialization or an English minor specially designed for Education students. Opportunity: It’s true that an English major prepares you for graduate school so you can, one day, teach English, but an English degree also opens up a multitude of other career opportunities.
